Flanged bearings
For certain applications SKF also produces stainless steel deep groove ball bearings with an external flange on the outer ring. The flange enables the bearings to be axially located in the housing. Such an arrangement is very simple in design and saves space; the housing bore need not be so expensive to machine as housing shoulders are not required.
SKF flanged stainless steel bearings are available in an open design, designation suffix R (fig) and a shielded version, with a Z shield at both sides, designation suffix 2ZR (fig).
The bearings have the same internal design, including the cage, as the corresponding bearings without flange. They are able to accommodate the same loads, operate at the same speeds, and the shielded bearings are filled with the same grease.
Plastic flange bearings offer more retention capability than a traditional sleeve bearing and would typically be used in applications where radial and/or axial loads are expected. Thomson Nyliner plastic flange bearings utilize design features such as anti-rotation keys that eliminate both linear and rotational motion.
Thomson Nyliner plastic flange bearings are made from the same high-performance polymer as the entire line of Thomson Nyliner polymer bearings and are thus more cost-efficient than a traditional metal bearing (while still maintaining the quality of standard associated with Thomson Nyliner products). Fluctuation in plastic flange bearing size is virtually nonexistent: the thin-wall construction assures that the plastic flange bearings maintain their thickness in most applications. These plastic flange bearings also feature the standard axial compensation gap to accommodate changes in temperature and humidity. Additionally, some of Thomson Nyliner's plastic flange bearings are available in Thomson Nyliner Plus high-performance polymer (capable of operating in temperatures up to 500°F).
Thomson Nyliner plastic flange bearings come in two varieties, Type 5 and Type 6:
•Type 5 bearings are plastic flange bearings and are available in diameters from 3/16” to 1-1/2” and 4mm to 25mm. Type 5 plastic flange bearings lack the anti-rotation key of Type 6 bearings.
•Type 6 plastic flange bearings are available in diameters from 3/16” to 1-1/2.” Additionally, Type 6 bearings feature an anti-rotation key to minimize axial motion. Type 6 plastic flange bearings are also available in Thomson Nyliner high-performance polymer.
In addition, the minimum shaft clearance is .001” for plastic flange bearings from 1.000” to 1.250” and .002” from sizes 1.250” to 1.500.”
