Few have the choice to move "bearings direct" . Cities remain, prepared to be rebuilt and reoccupied. Earthquake prone California leads the change in research and earthquake engineering. All new commercialstructures are now expected to meet strict earthquakeproof codes. To put it basically, all new architectural structures must be able tostand up to a certain level of shaking and not collapse. The burst of development in the technology of earthquake-proofing buildings has resulted in the humble but polished performance of the ubiquitous ball bearing being one of the stars! And it is a big star! Older engineering dictated a rigid supporting base. But, now a base which permits movement has allowed architectural structures to keepintegrity and thus save human life. The San Francisco International Airport showcases new sophisticated building technology.

The entire weight of the airport rests upon 267 columns and accompanying 5-foot diameter, steel ball bearingsput in at their bases. Each bearing rests within a concave basis, allowing the ball bearing to roll and move 20 inches in any direction when force is applied. During an earthquake, the lower plate moves in accordance with theground. With the ball bearing acting as a buffer to the upper surface, the movementoccurring above is greatly diminished. Once at rest, gravity works to realign the columns back to their resting point at centre base.

Other equivalent engineering presently being used in Japan makes it possible for skyscrapers to ‘float’ using a technique  called “base isolation”. Building columns rest on systems of ball bearings, springs, and padded cylinders. If you were to rub the palms of your hands together in a circular motion, you would be able to copy the movement of these systems gliding over the ball fag bearings.

Buildings therefore acquire a resilience, which can shield them from the full force of a quake. With this engineering, buildings are made to possibly resist quakes measuring 8 on the Richter scale, therefore decreasing damage and lowering repair bills! We here at TuneRS Motorsports have designed and developed the perfect, final solution for the dreaded Intermediate Shaft Bearing failure.

The cause of these bearing failures is insufficient lubrication. Our solution modifies the original Intermediate Shaft Flange and has a direct oil feed to the original Intermediate Shaft Bearing. We have adapted a pressure fed oil line from the engine oil pressure sender directly to an opening in the Intermediate Shaft Flange. This feeds fresh oil directly to the open end of the IMS bearing (after removing the seal to expose the ball bearings).

This is a cost effective way to protect against IMS failure, using the original parts. It is also not nearly as labor intensive as replacing the original bearing with a ceramic bearing. The system, however can also be used when replacing the bearing with the ceramic ball bearing version for added insurance.

The Align range of helicopters ina bearings to this day still remain one of the top machines of choice for pilots around the globe from 1st place competition winners to your general club flyer, pound for pound they are hard to beat (remember we’re talking value for money here). However with the Trex’s being priced substantially lower than top end machines their is some room for improvements
